MonsGeek M1 V5 VIA – 75% Aluminum ISO Barebone Kit, Gasket Mount and 8000mAh
The MonsGeek M1 V5 VIA Barebone ISO is a 75% aluminum keyboard kit with gasket mount for builders who want a solid platform without paying for switches and keycaps that they’re going to replace anyway. It comes with everything except switches and keycaps – and supports the ISO layout, which most European kits still treat as secondary.
Build Platform & Structure
Full CNC aluminum housing, top and bottom. The gasket mount with four silicone gaskets provides a cushioned and slightly flexible writing experience that rigidly mounted aluminum cases can’t replicate. The ball-catch quick-release system opens the case without tools – press to close, pull to open. For a kit designed to be opened and modified repeatedly, that’s important.
The plate is made of polycarbonate (PC), which flexes more than aluminum or steel and reduces low-frequency resonance – the ping characteristic of hollow aluminum builds. PORON plate foam and IXPE switch pads come pre-installed. Most kits in this category deliver thinner foam or nothing at all; the M1 V5 VIA gives you a usable starting point without mandatory modding.
VIA & QMK
Each key is remappable via VIA in a browser – no software installation required. JSON configuration files for ISO and ANSI layouts included. QMK source code available for those who want to dig deeper. The lighting effects (15+ preset modes) are also fully customizable via VIA. This is the version of M1 V5 that swaps the MonsGeek Driver for genuine open-source flexibility.
Connectivity & Battery
Tri-mode: Wired USB-C, 2.4GHz wireless with included receiver, and Bluetooth 5.0 with up to 3 devices stored simultaneously (via Fn+E/R/T). The 8,000mAh battery delivers 86 hours with RGB active and up to 500 hours without – which means that autonomy is measured in weeks, not sessions. The polling rate is 1,000Hz in wired mode and 2.4GHz; 125Hz in Bluetooth.
Hot-Swap & ISO Compatibility
5-pin hot-swap sockets support compatible 3- and 5-pin MX switches. South-facing PCB prevents interference with Cherry profile keycaps. Programmable aluminum knob controls volume and lighting by default, remappable to any function via VIA.
Founder’s Take
The M1 V5 VIA ISO Barebone exists because finding a quality 75% ISO barebone in Europe is harder than it should be. Most builders are forced to use ANSI layouts or pay import costs and wait weeks. This one ships from European stock, supports true ISO layout, and starts at a price that leaves budget for the switches and keycaps that effectively define the sound and feel of a keyboard. The PORON + IXPE foam stack is a genuine differentiator – it’s the kind of damping configuration you’d normally add after buying a cheaper kit. Here it’s already done.
The only real trade-off is the wireless mode selector: it’s under the Caps Lock key, which requires a keycap extractor to access. It works, but it’s not seamless if you frequently switch between wired and wireless modes. It’s worth knowing before you build.
⚠️ Barebone Warning: This kit does NOT include switches or keycaps. Switches and keycaps must be purchased separately.
⚠️ Enter ISO key compatibility: The Enter ISO key in this layout is only compatible with 3-pin MX switches. 5-pin switches require the pins to be cut or do not sit correctly in this specific position.
